Welcome to the Ephemeral Unnatural Balance Shrine!
I have made this shrine to show my extra love for this obscure Western Touhou fangame.
Read on to know why I love it so much!
The first thing that caught me most about this fangame was the art for its portraits, made by House of Sixten (he's a cool artist, check him out!)
It's an art style that I find unique compared to most other Touhou fangames. Sixten's use of very simple shading style and anatomy immediately made me drawn to it! However, it admittedly did take me a while to turn it into one of my greatest inspirations for my own art.
What I find most impressive about it is the lineart; if you zoom in closely, you'll actually see that the lines are kinda wobbly?! However, that doesn't stop the overall image from looking fantastic! I think this is due to Sixten's deep understanding of perspective and 3D shapes.
It's just like they say: an idiot admires complexity, but a genius admires simplicity (I think that's how it goes, at least?? ^^;;;)
Now that I've studied it, I've now started applying his techniques to my own art. Thanks, Ephemeral Unnatural Balance (or maybe House of Sixten in general) for the inspiration!
Here are some samples of Sixten's amazing art (sourced from his website):
I wish I could display everything here, but these are just samples, so oh well.
If you're a Touhou fan, this is a no-brainer. Any decent Touhou fangame should have a banger soundtrack!
But what makes this game unique is its arrangements of obscure tracks, tracks that have been largely overshadowed by the community. From PC-98 to obscure games ZUN has made music for, it has it all!
This game also has some original tracks, such as the Stage 2 and Stage 5 themes, but they're also good in their own right.
Most of the music was composed by ExPorygon, but a few other people have contributed to its OST. They're the ones to blame for making such a unique and catchy soundscape!
Here are my top 5 tracks from the game (with YouTube links if you wanna check them out yourself):
